CROOKED BROOKLYN

From 2001 to 2013, Mike Vecchione stood at the epicenter of power and peril as chief of the Rackets Division in the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office—the largest urban prosecution agency in the nation. In a borough where ambition and corruption often shared the same backroom, Vecchione waged war on organized crime syndicates and crooked politicians alike.

He didn’t just try cases—he dismantled empires.

In courtrooms thick with tension and streets shadowed by influence, Vecchione supervised, investigated, and prosecuted some of the most explosive felony cases in modern New York history. Each indictment detonated like a bombshell. Each conviction sent shockwaves through the corridors of power.

Crooked Brooklyn is a hard-edged saga of greed, betrayal, and the relentless pursuit of justice. Navigating a political minefield where alliances shifted like sand, Vecchione took on crimes that seemed ripped from the darkest headlines—from bribe-soaked judges to cold-blooded killers who believed themselves untouchable.

He led the charge to bring down:

  • Three state Supreme Court judges who traded justice for cash

  • One of the most powerful political bosses in the country

  • Two police officers moonlighting as Mafia assassins

  • A State Assemblywoman corrupted by power

  • And a respected oral surgeon secretly harvesting and selling bones from the recently deceased to medical supply companies

Each case peeled back another layer of a borough where power protected the corrupt—until it didn’t.

Unbelievable yet true, Crooked Brooklyn pulses with larger-than-life figures and jaw-dropping betrayals torn straight from the tabloids. Perfect for fans of Law & Order, devoted true crime readers, and anyone hungry for a raw, insider’s look at the system designed to keep us safe—this is the story of how one prosecutor stared down the darkness and refused to blink.

HAND OF THE KILLER

When the District Attorney refuses to prosecute a drunken cop who plowed his car into a young family, the city ignites. Grief turns to fury. Protesters flood the streets demanding justice, and the fragile trust between the police and the community fractures overnight.

Then tragedy strikes again.

The young wife of a police officer is found brutally murdered in her own home, and the outrage that once simmered now threatens to explode. Into this firestorm steps Mike Gioca—the DA’s top homicide prosecutor and least popular choice. The police distrust him because he once put one of their own behind bars. The community distrusts him because he is seen as the DA’s golden boy. To both sides, he is the enemy.

City officials demand a swift arrest to calm the chaos. Community leaders warn Gioca not to make an example of the “usual suspects.” And complicating everything is one haunting fact: the only witness to the murder is a two-year-old child.

When Gioca orders the arrest of a local sex offender, critics erupt, accusing him of grabbing the most convenient villain. The streets quiet—for a moment. But when Gioca insists that every shred of evidence be scrutinized, even at the risk of weakening his own case, the police turn on him for jeopardizing what they call an open-and-shut conviction.

With the trial looming, Gioca’s hopes—and those of his team, veteran detective Tim Clark and rookie assistant district attorney Dina Mitchell—rest on a single, fragile piece of evidence: a baby’s pacifier found in the suspect’s pocket. It is a detail so small it could be overlooked… yet powerful enough to bind a killer to his crime—or let him walk free.

MURDER ON THE BRIDGE

When a young girl’s lifeless body is discovered on the towering span of the Williamsburg Bridge, shock grips Brooklyn. The crime is so savage, so unthinkable, that seasoned detectives and hardened prosecutors can describe the killer only one way: a devil in human form.

But monsters don’t stay hidden forever.

When the suspect is finally captured, the nightmare shifts from the shadows of the bridge to the harsh light of the courtroom. Now it is up to prosecutor Michael Vecchione to confront the man accused of the unthinkable. The evidence is chilling. The stakes are absolute. And the community demands justice.

In a trial charged with grief, outrage, and raw emotion, Vecchione must outmaneuver a ruthless defense and ensure that the man they believe capable of such evil never walks free again.

Because when a crime feels like the work of the devil, only relentless determination—and the full force of the law—can deliver justice.

FRIENDS OF THE FAMILY

“One of the most spectacular cases of police corruption in the city.”
— The New York Times

Friends of the Family plunges readers into the most explosive corruption scandal ever to shake the New York City Police Department.

At its center are two decorated NYPD detectives—Louis Eppolito and Stephen Caracappa—who secretly lived double lives as Mafia hit men. Sworn to uphold the law, they instead enforced the will of organized crime, selling their badges to the very underworld they were meant to destroy.

Told by the men who ultimately unraveled the conspiracy—detective Tommy Dades and prosecutor Michael Vecchione—with co-writer David Fisher, Friends of the Family reads like a crime thriller, yet every revelation is chillingly real. Together, Dades and Vecchione cracked what was long considered New York’s coldest and most untouchable case.

In the tradition of Wiseguy by Nicholas Pileggi and Underboss by Peter Maas, this gripping true-crime account exposes a stunning betrayal from within—what the New York Daily News called “the worst betrayal of the badge in the NYPD’s history.”

It is a story of greed, power, and corruption at the highest levels—and of the relentless pursuit of justice that finally brought two rogue detectives down.

HOMICIDE IS MY BUSINESS

The story of Luigi Ronsisvalle is an unflinching, intimate portrait of a professional killer—and a man driven by ambition he could never quite satisfy.

In many ways, Luigi’s life mirrors that of countless working men and women who chase a dream that remains just out of reach. But Luigi’s dream came with a deadly cost. From the age of twelve, he wanted only one thing: to become a made man in the Mafia. As he once told a presidential commission, “American child falls in love with baseball, I fall in love with Mafia.”

To earn that honor, people had to die.

Coauthor Michael Vecchione spent months interviewing Ronsisvalle about his years inside both the Sicilian and American Mafia, gradually gaining his trust and becoming his confidant. Over long days and deeper conversations, the hardened killer began to confront the life he had chosen—and the code of omertà, the sacred silence drilled into him since childhood.

Luigi carried out every order his bosses gave him, including the murders of thirteen people. Yet unlike other hitmen, he was denied the recognition and status he believed he had earned. The betrayal cut deep. The honor he craved never came.

Drawing on personal files, handwritten notes, and official records, this gripping account peels back the layers of a complicated life shaped by loyalty, violence, and disillusionment. It is the story of a man who finally realized that the only path to redemption required betraying the very world he once idolized.

Contains mature themes.

BEHIND THE MURDER CURTAIN

When patients at Veterans Hospitals—men and women who survived war and were finally on the road to recovery—begin dying in alarming numbers, the losses seem tragic but routine.

They aren’t.

It falls to VA Special Agent in Charge Bruce Sackman to uncover the truth. What he discovers shatters every assumption about safety inside hospital walls and exposes a chilling reality: sometimes the greatest threat to a patient stands quietly at the bedside, hidden behind a drawn curtain.

Behind the Murder Curtain is the true story of Sackman’s transformation from a white-collar crime investigator—tracking embezzlement and financial fraud within the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General—into the world’s leading authority on Medical Serial Killers (MSKs): doctors and nurses who exploit trust, access, and privacy to murder the vulnerable in their care.

Pulled into a macabre hunt for a killer in scrubs, Sackman uncovers patterns others failed to see. What begins as a single suspicious death widens into a disturbing pattern of calculated killings. As he digs deeper, he reveals how predators operate within the very institutions meant to heal.

The book chronicles how this relentless investigator identified and helped bring down four MSKs operating inside VA hospitals—and how he developed the groundbreaking Red Flags Protocol, a system now taught to investigators and forensic nurses around the world as a critical tool for detecting and stopping medical serial killers before more patients die.

A gripping true-crime account, Behind the Murder Curtain pulls back the hospital drape to expose a hidden danger—and the determined pursuit of justice that finally brought it into the light.

A True Crime Fantasy

$11.99 – $24.99

When a priest assigned to the Vatican’s Office of Exorcisms in New York begins tracking a wave of upheaval in American cities—riots, outrage, and disbelief following the acquittals of perpetrators accused of particularly heinous crimes—he notices something chilling.

The dates.

Each shocking crime occurred shortly before a satanic exorcism he had either performed or witnessed. The pattern is too precise to dismiss. Too sinister to ignore.

As his research expands beyond the United States, the priest uncovers eerily similar events across the globe: brutal crimes, failed prosecutions, social chaos—and the shadow of exorcism. A man steeped in the theology of evil, he reaches an unthinkable conclusion:

Satan is not working in metaphor. He is working the system.

In America, the Devil’s victories have come not just through violence—but through the courtroom. Cases crumble. Evidence falters. Juries hesitate. Jurisdiction after jurisdiction, prosecutors lose. And beneath the surface, the priest believes, a master manipulator is twisting investigations and trials to guarantee acquittals and spread disorder.

Then Brooklyn becomes ground zero.

To confront the Evil One on legal battleground rather than sacred ground, a different kind of warrior is needed. Enter Michael Gioca, Chief of the Rackets Division in the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office—a prosecutor known for his skill, grit, and refusal to back down. Handpicked by a covert government agency, Gioca is thrust into a war unlike any he has ever fought.

Inspired by real crimes investigated and prosecuted in Brooklyn, Fallen Angel: A True Crime Fantasy blends authentic legal drama with supernatural terror, telling the story of one prosecutor’s battle against a force determined to corrupt justice itself.

In this war, the courtroom is the battlefield. And the adversary is eternal.

FALLEN ANGEL

FALLEN ANGEL BOOK 2

The War for the Soul of Brooklyn

$10.99 – $29.99

There is a war raging for the very soul of Brooklyn—and the stakes have never been higher.

Across America, a disturbing pattern has emerged: perpetrators of especially heinous crimes walking free after trial. The wave of acquittals draws the attention of a priest from the Vatican’s Office of Exorcisms in New York. As he studies the dates and circumstances, a terrifying connection surfaces—each crime preceded a satanic exorcism.

His conclusion is as shocking as it is unthinkable: Satan is orchestrating the chaos.

In courtrooms across the United States, the Devil is winning—twisting investigations, undermining prosecutions, and sowing anarchy in the streets. And now, Brooklyn has become ground zero.

The Fallen Angel saga continues as prosecutor Michael Gioca, Chief of the Rackets Division in the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office, once again finds himself on the front lines. Handpicked by a covert government agency to confront the Evil One, Gioca proved in Book 1 that he could outmaneuver his sinister adversary in the courtroom. But Satan learns quickly.

If Brooklyn is to fall, it will not be through random violence—it will be through the destruction of its foundation.

For generations, family has been the heartbeat of Brooklyn—the Borough of Churches—binding neighborhoods together with faith, loyalty, and tradition. The Devil knows that if he can fracture that sacred institution, the borough will crumble from within.

Blending crime, fantasy, and supernatural suspense, Fallen Angel – A True Crime Fantasy, Book 2 plunges deeper into an epic spiritual and legal battle.

Will Satan finally succeed in tearing Brooklyn apart?
Or will Michael Gioca once again stand between the city and damnation?

Anarchy, Chaos… Peace?

$10.99 – $29.99

In a nation reeling from shocking acquittals and unpunished atrocities, a priest from the Vatican’s Office of Exorcisms in New York uncovers a terrifying pattern: each miscarriage of justice was preceded by a satanic exorcism.

The implication is chilling.

The Devil is not merely tempting souls—he is manipulating the justice system itself, plunging America into anarchy, chaos, and despair.

The battle ignites in Brooklyn.

In the Fallen Angel series, Chief Michael Gioca of the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Rackets Division is secretly recruited by a covert government agency to confront the Evil One on an unexpected battlefield: the courtroom. In Book 1, Gioca proves a formidable opponent, outmaneuvering Satan’s schemes and delivering hard-won victories for justice.

But evil adapts.

In Book 2, the Devil escalates his assault, targeting the very heart of Brooklyn—its families. Violence spreads. Trust erodes. The Borough of Churches trembles as unspeakable crimes threaten to tear apart the community Gioca has sworn to protect.

Now, in Fallen Angel: A True Crime Fantasy, Book 3, the conflict reaches its most dangerous chapter yet. As chaos tightens its grip and the stakes become apocalyptic, Gioca faces his greatest test.

Will the Evil One finally triumph?
Or will Michael Gioca rise as the Devil’s ultimate adversary?

The fate of Brooklyn hangs in the balance—and only one side can claim the final victory.

  • This is an amazing and informative book. Micheal, Tommy, and David are incredible writers! This book really goes into detail on how these mafia cops were brought to justice. What makes it more interesting is that the authors of the book helped do so! They cover all the details about this case and how it started off as a cold case. This is what the world needs more of. People that really care about our society and want to make the world a better place. I recommend this book to anyone that loves mafia content or true crime. 10 out of 10 !! • I enjoyed reading this story. It was hard to put down. I read it in 2 days. I have always been interested in the Mafia. The story is written in plain, every day English with very little slang or idiom. I actually remember reading about some of the characters in local newspapers during the time when the story takes place.

  • Engaging read on a regrettably grim reality as found by Bruce Sackman and his team. A testament and tribute to professionals who are filled with passion for justice. Thanks to investigators, agents, and medical professionals like Bruce Sackman and his team, crimes that would have gone undetected and unpunished were resolved. Going beyond the stories, the Red Flags Protocol developed is a great tool to detect similar crimes in the future. A must-read for healthcare investigators.

    Sheila Tagle

  • When I think of a "serial killer" I picture a Wayne Gacy or Norman Collins. NEVER do I think about physicians in a white lab coat with official hospital badges dangling below their embroidered name. Mr. Sackman gives a riveting account of how "MSK's" (medial serial killers) were discovered, the uphill battle it is to prosecute them, how widespread the problem is, why medicine is a perfect setting for a would-be killer to gravitate to and what can be done to detect a MSK early in their "killing career."

    L. Hewitt

  • This book is a riveting look at a subset of criminal activity not often discussed or even thought about – the world of the medical serial killer. The author provides a behind-the-scenes look at not only the details of the investigative process, but also the personalities that shape each investigation. It is a compelling, fascinating and easy read – although frightening in its content! This is to hospitals what the movie Jaws was to beaches! A must-read for anyone interested in criminal investigations and how that world intersects with the world of medicine.
